چکیده

The thermal conductivity of a dense multi-component plasma is critical to the modeling of accreting neutron stars. To this end, we perform large-scale molecular dynamics simulations to calculate the static structure factor of the dense multi-component plasma in the neutron star crust from near the photosphere-ocean boundary to the vicinity of the neutron drip point. The structure factors are used to validate a microscopic linear mixing rule that is valid for arbitrarily complex plasmas over a wide range of Coulomb couplings. The microscopic mixing rule in turn implies and validates the linear mixing rule for the equation of state properties and also the linear mixing rule for the electrical and thermal conductivities of dense multi-component plasmas. To make our result as useful as possible, for the specific cases of electrical and thermal conductivities, we provide a simple analytic fit that is valid for arbitrarily complex multi-component plasmas over a wide range of Coulomb couplings. We compute the thermal conductivity for a representative compositional profile of the outer crust of an accreting neutron star in which hundreds of nuclear species can be present. We utilize our results to re-examine the so-called impurity parameter formalism as used to characterize impure plasmas. The rp Process Ashes from Stable Nuclear Burning on an Accreting Neutron Star

The temperature and nuclear composition of the crust and ocean of an accreting neutron star depend on the mix of material (the ashes) that is produced at lower densities by fusion of the accreting hydrogen and helium. The hydrogen/helium burning is thermally stable at high accretion rates, a situation encountered in weakly magnetic (B ≪ 10 G) neutron stars accreting at rates Ṁ > 10M⊙ yr −1 and ...

Reaction Rates for Dense Matter Burning

Karl-Ludwig Kratz Universität Mainz Email: [email protected] An interesting question in nuclear astrophysics is the fate of post X-ray burst matter. Once an accreting neutron star has undergone thermonuclear runaway, the ashes of the burst are forced down into the crust of the neutron star. With increasing density a volume element of matter undergoes a number of electron captures and neutron...

Neutrino-pair bremsstrahlung by electrons in neutron star crusts

Neutrino-pair bremsstrahlung by relativistic degenerate electrons in a neutron-star crust at densities 109 g cm −3 <∼ ρ <∼ 1.5 × 1014 g cm−3 is analyzed. The processes taken into account are neutrino emission due to Coulomb scattering of electrons by atomic nuclei in a Coulomb liquid, and electronphonon scattering (the phonon contribution) and Bragg diffraction (the static-lattice contribution)...

Magnetic Screening in Accreting Neutron Stars

We investigate whether the magnetic field of an accreting neutron star may be diamagnetically screened by the accreted matter. We assume the freshly accumulated material is unmagnetized, and calculate the rate at which the intrinsic stellar magnetic flux is transported into it via Ohmic diffusion from below. For very high accretion rates Ṁ (larger than the Eddington rate ṀEdd), Brown and Bildst...

Time-of-flight mass measurements for nuclear processes in neutron star crusts.

We present results from time-of-flight nuclear mass measurements at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory that are relevant for neutron star crust models. The masses of 16 neutron-rich nuclei in the scandium-nickel range were determined simultaneously, with the masses of (61)V, (63)Cr, (66)Mn, and (74)Ni measured for the first time with mass excesses of -30.510(890) MeV, -35.280(650...
